Definition and Risk Factors of Plantar Warts

Plantar warts, small growths caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV, often appear on the soles of the feet. Unlike common warts, which typically grow on the hands, plantar warts can be painful due to the pressure exerted on the soles when walking or standing. These warts may have a rough, grainy appearance with tiny black dots, which are actually clotted blood vessels. Several risk factors increase the likelihood of developing plantar warts. Close contact with the virus, such as walking barefoot in damp and communal areas like locker rooms, swimming pools, or public showers, can put your feet at risk. Additionally, those with a weakened immune system, such as individuals with diabetes or HIV, are more susceptible to plantar warts. Constantly moist or sweaty feet can provide an ideal environment for the virus to thrive. If you have developed a plantar wart, it is strongly suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can provide relief with appropriate treatment methods.

Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Crosstown Podiatry. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.

Causes of Ankle Pain Without Injury

Ankle pain, even in the absence of apparent injury, can be a perplexing and discomforting experience. Arthritis, a common culprit, may inflame the ankle joints, causing persistent pain and stiffness. Inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can exacerbate discomfort. Likewise, Achilles tendinitis, marked by inflammation of the Achilles tendon, often induces ankle pain, particularly during movement. Structural issues such as flat feet or high arches may contribute to ankle pain by altering the distribution of weight and impacting joint alignment. Nerve compression, as seen in conditions like tarsal tunnel syndrome, can also manifest as ankle discomfort without external trauma. Additionally, overuse or repetitive strain from activities like prolonged standing or walking may strain the ankle ligaments and muscles, resulting in pain. Understanding the diverse sources of ankle pain beyond visible injuries is important for an accurate diagnosis and targeted intervention. If you have unexplained ankle pain, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist who can determine what the reason is, and offer correct treatment methods.

Foot Size Changes During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, many women experience changes in their bodies, including foot size growth. This phenomenon is primarily attributed to hormonal changes and increased fluid retention. The hormone relaxin, which helps to relax the ligaments in the pelvis for childbirth, can also affect the ligaments in the feet, leading to an increase in foot size. When it comes to addressing foot size changes during pregnancy, consulting a podiatrist can be beneficial. A podiatrist specializes in diagnosing and treating foot and ankle issues, in addition to providing guidance on managing foot discomfort and swelling during pregnancy. If you have foot-related concerns during pregnancy, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to ensure these issues are addressed promptly, increasing your health and well-being during this transformative period.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

The Importance of Addressing Foot Pain

Foot pain, though often dismissed as a temporary inconvenience, should never be ignored, as it can signify underlying issues that demand attention. Our feet, the foundation of our mobility, are intricate structures comprising bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments. Persistent pain may indicate conditions such as plantar fasciitis, arthritis, or tendinitis, which can worsen without intervention. Ignoring foot pain can lead to altered gait patterns, placing undue stress on other joints and potentially causing a domino effect of discomfort. Moreover, certain foot pain could be a symptom of systemic conditions like diabetes or circulatory issues, requiring timely medical intervention. Chronic foot pain may impact one's quality of life, hindering daily activities and diminishing overall well-being. By recognizing the significance of foot pain and seeking professional evaluation, individuals can safeguard the essential role their feet play in maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle. If you have any type of foot pain, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can provide you with effective relief methods.
